The clearane spec between the terminal soldering and wire insulaiton

When manufacturing wire harness, we may need to solder the wires to the terminals. The insulation clearance is defined in IPC-620-A also.

Target - Class 1,2,3
• There is an insulation clearance (C) of one diameter (D) between the end of the insulation and the top of the solder fillet.

info-240-169

Acceptable - Class 1,2,3
• The insulation clearance is two wire diameters (D) or less including insulation or 1.5 mm [0.060 in] (whichever is greater).
• Insulation clearance does not permit shorting to adjacent conductors.
• Insulation clearance is near zero.

Process Indicator - Class 2,3
• The insulation clearance is greater than two wire diameters including insulation or 1.5 mm [0.060 in], whichever is
greater, but does not permit shorting to adjacent conductor.

Defect - Class 1,2,3
• Insulation clearance permits shorting to adjacent conductors.
