What is the Discrete Wire Termination – Overhang(exceed) spec in IPC-A-620?
(Note: These criteria are not applicable to pass-through IDC connectors.)
For IDC type connector assembling with cable, discrete Wire Termination – Overhang spec, we follow IPC-A-620, the spec detail as below.
Target - Class 1,2,3
• Overhang (L) of the wire extends to the far edge of the IDC connectors.
Acceptable - Class 1
• Wire end is flush with electrical (second) contact.
Acceptable - Class 2,3
• Overhang of L of the wire is equal or greater than 50% overall wire diameter.

Defect - Class 1,2,3
• Wire does not pass through both IDC contacts.
• Exposed conductors violate minimum design electrical clearance.
