What is Twinax cable?

Dual core cables are designed specifically to enhance the performance of high-speed data applications. Compared to coaxial cables with a single conductor, dual core cables incorporate two conductors in their design, thereby improving signal integrity, speed, and bandwidth.

Compared with micro coaxial cables, the main advantage of dual core cables is that they can transmit high-speed differential pairs with very low intra pair skew between the positive and negative signals of the differential pair Samtec's Andy Shrout said. Skew is the time delay difference between the positive and negative signals of a differential pair. Intrapair skew refers to the Skew within the pair itself, rather than the Skew between two differential pairs. With the increasing complexity of today's chips (chips, FPGAs), offset differences between wire pairs are no longer a problem, but intra wire offset, which refers to the offset within the differential pair itself or within a single dual core, remains crucial. As data rates reach 112 Gb/s PAM4 and 224 Gb/s PAM4, it becomes even more important.

A dual axis mainly consists of four components:

Internal conductors or signal conductors carry signals. Twinax has a positive signal conductor and a negative signal conductor.

Dielectric is a non-conductive material surrounding a signal conductor.

The shielding layer for the grounding circuit is wrapped around two conductors in the dielectric.

Cover the protective cover with a protective sheath or external insulation layer.

Comparison between Dual axis Cable and Coaxial Cable

Compared to coaxial cables, the main advantages of dual core cables are higher data rates (5 Gb/s or higher) and higher signal frequencies (2.5 GHz or higher). As the frequency or data rate increases, the propagation speed of the signal becomes faster. When the receiving chip is not coupled, it is difficult to recognize the differential pair, which can lead to a large number of bit errors.
