Renesas Electronics, a global semiconductor solutions provider, recently announced the launch of its RA2L2 microcontroller (MCU) product line, which is the first in the industry to support the new USB-C Revision 2.4 standard. This MCU is based on the 48MHz Arm Cortex-M23 processor and has rich functional features, making it an ideal choice for portable devices and personal computers (PCs).

The new USB Type-C cable and connector specification version 2.4 can reduce the voltage detection threshold (0.613V for 1.5A power supply and 1.165V for 3.0A power supply). The RA2L2 MCU is the industry's first MCU to support this new standard.
The RA2L2 MCU adopts proprietary low-power technology, providing an operating current of 87.5 µ A/MHz and a software standby current of only 250nA. It also provides an independent working clock for low-power UART, which can receive signals from Wi Fi and/or low-power Bluetooth ® The data from the module can be used to wake up the system. Including support for USB-C, these features make RA2L2 an ideal solution for portable devices such as USB data loggers, charging cases, barcode scanners, etc.
The new MCU not only supports USB-C with CC detection function and up to 15W (5V/3A), as well as USB FS, but also provides LP UART, I3C, and CAN interfaces to help designers reduce the number of required components, effectively reduce BOM costs, save circuit board space, and reduce power consumption.
The RA2L2 MCU is supported by the Renesas Flexible Configuration Software Package (FSP). FSP provides the necessary infrastructure software, including multiple RTOS, BSP, peripheral drivers, middleware, connectivity and networking functions, as well as reference software for building complex AI, motor control, and cloud solutions, thereby accelerating application development speed. It allows customers to integrate their existing code and selected RTOS with FSP, providing ample flexibility for application development. With FSP, it is possible to simplify the migration of existing IPs between different RA products.
Daryl Khoo, Vice President of Embedded Processing Marketing Division at Renesas, stated: "The RA2L2 product group MCU, as our first product to fully support full speed USB and USB-Type C connectors, can effectively control system costs by reducing external components and keeping them at a low level; At the same time, continuing the low-power advantage of Renesas' popular RA2L1 product, these new products demonstrate our strength and commitment to quickly responding to customer needs and providing efficient solutions.
